Viktoria Plzeň gave its fans two presents before Christmas. After Roman Květ the club presents another new player which is striker Matěj Vydra! The 30-year-old Czech international last played for Burnley in the Premier League. He has now signed for Viktorka for two and a half years.

Matěj Vydra is one of the Czech national team players and has a wealth of experience, especially in England, where he started for Watford, West Brom and most recently Burnley, where he scored eight goals in the Premier League. Now he will wear the Viktoria jersey!

"When the opportunity arose to get such a quality offensive player, we immediately reacted and we are very happy to welcome Matěj to our team. We want to be well-prepared for the spring part of the season and we believe that he will fit in perfectly and will be a great addition to our team," commented Daniel Kolář, Viktoria´s sporting director.

"Matěj Vydra is of course coming back from a knee injury, but he is now healed and ready to join our team in preparation. I see a huge motivation for him to get back to where he was just before the injury, when he was playing in one of the best competitions in the world. I wish him to do well in our jersey," added Adolf Šádek, Viktoria´s CEO.

"Viktoria´s negotiations were fast and concrete, I will have all the necessary conditions here. I have seen the club´s facilities and they are top-notch for training and regeneration. I am glad that we have reached an agreement and now it is up to me to be able to assert myself and be an asset, my motivation is great," said new Pilsen striker.

"Matěj has already attended several Viktoria matches during the autumn, for example in the Champions League. He is very well acquainted with coach Michal Bílek, who first called him to the national team. We agreed that there are ideal conditions for his new engagement, and he wants to play for the title, which the club is reaching for," said the player´s representative Ondřej Chovanec.


Matěj Vydra is an product of Jihlava, after which he also played in Baník Ostrava, from where he headed to Udinese in Italy. Since then, he has spent 12 years abroad, most of the time in England. Most recently he was at Burnley, where, among other things, in 2020 he became the first ever Czech player to win the Premier League Goal of the Month award. In total, he played 106 games in this famous competition. He can also be proud of the award for the best player of the English Second Division (Championship) in 2013. In the same year he was also awarded as a Talent of the Year in the Czech Footballer Of The Year poll. He has been in the national team since the age of 20, where he has played in 46 matches and scored 7 goals. It is not without interest that he debuted in the national team under the current coach of Viktoria Plzeň Michal Bílek.
