Viktoria Plzeň played Sparta in the semi-finals of the MOL Cup. The match ended 0:1 in favour of the Prague team. Viktoria finished just outside the gates of the final.
Both teams were well aware of what was at stake. That´s why the beginning of the game was more cautious, nobody wanted to make a mistake. However, Pilsen was slightly more active, trying to penetrate the penalty area, especially on the left side of the pitch. However, they didn´t get any significant chances despite the strong defence of the opponent.
In the 17th minute, Václav Jemelka saw his first yellow card of the match after an illegal intervention. Two minutes later, the score changed when Jaroslav Zelený sent his team into the lead with an accurate header. Shortly afterwards, Spartans managed to score another goal, but it was called back due to offside after VAR intervention.
The game was then played mostly in the middle of the pitch, where there were many personal duels often on the edge of the rules. After one of the fouls, the referee awarded a yellow card to Lukáš Červ. The Victorians tried to put pressure on the home team towards the end of the half, when Lukáš Kalvach and Matěj Vydra got in the end, but none of the shots ended up in the net. The first half ended 0:1.
Coach Miroslav Koubek made one change for the second half. Jan Paluska replaced Václav Jemelka, who had a yellow card. Matěj Vydra got the ball inside the penalty area and tried to finish at the back post, but his attempt was blocked for a corner kick. In the 62nd minute, goalkeeper Martin Jedlička made a great save to prevent another score change.
Coach Koubek gradually resorted to more substitutions. Firstly, Amar Memić came on the pitch instead of Milan Havel. Then came Prince Adu and Jiri Maxim Panoš, who replaced Lukáš Červ and Raffi Durosinmi.
Victorians tried to reverse the unfavourable development of the match. They threatened most on the left wing, where Cadu got to the small whitewash several times, but could not find any of his teammates. Pavel Šulc also had a shot, but his attempt was blocked out of danger. Although Viktoria tried to do something about the result, they couldn´t erase the one-goal deficit from the first half. Our journey in the MOL Cup ends just before the gates of the final.
